What getting a black belt means to me: When I signed up for karate four years ago, it was as an incentive for my son Zach to get his black belt. The prospect of having me bow to him and calling him sir helped push Zach over the top in his commitment to attain Shodan.

The fact that I’ve lasted for four years and learned as much as I have is a testament to the power of God. I think that God gives us abilities and opportunities and expects us to pursue those things so that He can be glorified as we become the people He created us to be. I’m not naturally gifted with athletic ability, but "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." The glory belongs to Him!

Karate is more than an athletic endeavor. The principles we practice as karatekas consistently reinforce the spiritual foundation Leah and I have tried to establish for our family. Karate has been a wonderful experience for our entire family and has been a great way for us as parents to enjoy something in common with our kids. I am so thankful for all the encouragement and time that Leah gives to me and the kids despite her hectic schedule. Zach always inspires me with his enthusiasm and determination, especially as I’ve watched him promoted to Nidan and now working on Sandan. I’m only in this test because Katherine and Lindsay inspired me to work hard as they’ve been working toward their black belt, and I can’t wait to see both of them take their black belt test! Katherine always gives things her best effort and Lindsay always sees the best in people. I deeply appreciate how both girls honor their parents by continuing to persevere at things like karate.

Finally, I feel so blessed to call Conrad Jones my friend as well as my sensei. He has been such a significant role model for our children and for us as he not only teaches but lives out the black belt principles. I hope that I am half as encouraging to the people around me as he is to the people around him. I also am indebted to all of the black belts who have taught me over the years, and at the risk of unintentionally omitting some, especially Steve Camp, Joey Fulcher, Dennis Shepherd, Greg Glass and Robert Dolan, all of whom have earned my deepest respect.

When I think of Alan, I have to wonder where on earth he finds the time …
I also wonder how one man can be so incredibly kind.

Teaching school, karate, three kids and playing in a band.
The way he accomplishes all this has made me his biggest fan.

And when his day is finally over, and it’s time to hit the sack ...
I hope he doesn’t dream much … especially of handing the car keys to Zach!

With Leah, Zach, Katherine and Lindsay, what a rich life this man lives!
And with all that he receives, he doubles that with what he gives.

One thing you may not know about Alan: His sense of humor is different than other folks.
That would explain why he’s the only one who gets Mr. Jones’s jokes!

Thanks, Alan. You are awesome at karate … and with your talent there is no end!
You’ve definitely earned this Black Belt, and I’m so proud to be called your friend.
