Perseverance, discipline, respect … these words may not mean much to most people,
but to me they mean a lot. These words are just a small sample of what karate has
taught me. I didn’t know it then, but when I took my first karate class, I was preparing
myself to earn my Black Belt. I spent hundreds of hours learning, re-learning and
correcting moves. When I look back, I know that it was worth it. Getting my Black
Belt is a symbol to me that I can do anything if I work hard enough. My goals and
dreams have all changed since I started taking karate. Well, all of them except
one: Getting my Black Belt is the one goal that has never changed. I know I could
never have done this alone. There are so many people who have worked endlessly with
me to learn everything that I need to know. I truly thank them all and they will
never know how much I appreciate them. I also want to thank my parents. They have
helped me greatly. Not just driving me to all my classes, but with other things,
too. My dad works with me on how to grapple and spar and my mom helps me with my
stances. My brother has always been a constant source of encouragement. I know there
is no way I could have made it this far in karate and life without them. Earning
my Black Belt has become part of my life and the people in my life share this with
me.
Postscript: To the Scholls, the Bells, the Bollens, and Michael LoJacono … I’ll be there for you, “Future Black Belts!” |
