Receiving my Black Belt means achieving a goal that I set for myself over three years ago. I initially started taking karate as a form of rehabilitation for a torn ACL. However, once I began learning more and more about the art itself, I became fascinated with the amount of thought that goes behind every move. I cannot imagine the void that there would have been in my life had I not started and continued my Black Belt pursuit over the past 3-1/2 years. Finally, for all the adults who may read this, do not think that karate is only for children. As a matter of fact, I believe that just the opposite is true. Karate is a very thought-provoking and challenging art that any adult in any career could benefit from. I am amazed at how many adults I see who I know deep down are interested in beginning a study of karate, but who can’t get the courage to step outside the box and try something that isn’t mainstream. Please, if you have ever had any inclination to try karate, give it a shot. The worst thing that could happen is you stop taking, but the best thing that could happen is you find something that becomes a hobby you are passionate about and a great way to get your exercise!

Ode to Brent Tanner

by Conrad Jones, May 2004

Brent is a very talented martial artist who’s got it all …
But his biggest obsession is with that game called baseball!

Brent and Mr. Jones like to talk about food … it can go on and on …
They must eat good … they are both so darn strong!

From crab legs to sports and back to sushi …
There’s hardly time to mention Brent’s beautiful wife, Julie.

Brent’s katas are awesome, it’s almost like he dances.
It looks like in September, it will be time to teach Baby Frances.

Thanks, Brent, for your friendship … you are destined for great things, it seems.
You surely make a great addition to the “Black Belt Team!”
