Getting a Black Belt would mean that I accomplished a difficult goal through effort, sacrifice and determination. These traits are important life skills that are highly valued in my family. After eight years, it would be a symbol of my commitment to one of my favorite hobbies and my determination to never give up.

The Ballad of Ian

by Conrad Jones, December 2005

Ian has grown so much, he no longer is a scrawny little kid.
Do you think his favorite food helped his growth ... that being fried squid?

Ian’s brother Colin has grown a lot, too.
I don’t know how Judy can come up with enough food!

Getting a Black Belt is an exclamation point, not a comma.
Part of karate will help Ian in another love: high school drama.

I’m sure Judy, Steve and Colin are proud of Ian’s hard work for eight years.
His perseverance and attitude could put a grown man in tears.

How many hundreds of classes has Judy sat through with encouragement that was heartfelt?
Today, Judy Zimmerman, you have earned your Black Belt!

Thank you, Ian, for showing us what a Black Belt truly should be …
You have shown me and many others that we all hold the key.
