Getting a Black Belt means to me that I have completed a long-term goal. It means that I will be a model for lower-ranked students, and that I should still do the best I can. I now have people looking up to me, and I need to help those people get to where I will be. Getting a Black Belt shows me that I can accomplish whatever I want to if I put my mind to it. I have learned that practice at home does pay off, and this explains a lot of “Why do I have homework?” Karate training has helped me in many situations. The most important lesson for me is self-control. When I am made fun of, I can ignore the person and walk away. Even though this angers me, I don’t get mad. This keeps me out of trouble.

Ode to Matthew Moynihan

by Conrad Jones, January 2005

When Matthew started karate, he was all giggles, and bounced around like a newborn fawn …
A little different from older Black Belt brother John.

He has grown a great deal, and will probably reach for the stars.
One day we may see him on stage, getting down with his electric guitar.

One day Matthew will probably run out of goals and get lost.
If he does, he could be the King of LaCrosse.

Brendan and Kristi have done a great job with their two sons.
All their activities have definitely kept them on the run.

I would like to say thanks, Mom and Dad, for sharing your two boys …
Watching them grow up here at karate has been a real joy.

I think Matthew is going to have a great life, and do great things.
I’m sure he will accomplish a lot, as long as he doesn’t sing.
