I started karate when I was only two at day care. I tried out the free karate lesson and decided that I liked it. So, from then on I have been taking karate lessons. As I have been taking lessons I have progressed in my knowledge about what REALLY happens in the REAL world and what REAL bad guys are like. I have learned to use my zanshin, or awareness, in the real world. I now have the ability and awareness for when I go off to college, when I will be on my own. Ever since I have started karate I have felt safer because I know how to defend myself out in the real world. To me, getting my Black Belt means that I have progressed in my knowledge of defending myself. A Black Belt should have excellent manners, respect, courage, perseverance, honesty, integrity, awareness and self-control. When you receive your Black Belt, it means that you have displayed all of these qualities. I want to get my Black Belt because I have tried and practiced for all of these years and have displayed those qualities. When I get my Black Belt, I hope I can spread my knowledge to the world so it can stay safe. It would be an honor to receive my Black Belt.

Rebecca started karate about the time she was learning to walk …
Her goals are to be a doctor and comedian, so you’d better listen when she talks.

With favorite foods like chocolate and sizzling filet from Ruth’s Chris
She’d better be a doctor to pay for all of this!

With Mom and Grandma’s influence, Rebecca’s determination has been greater than most folk’s …
It kind of reminds me of some of her favorite teams: the Hoosiers and the Colts.

From helping teach at FRA to getting her Black Belt, Rebecca’s future looks cool.
I’m so glad I’ve gotten to watch her grow up … she shines like a jewel.

From a three-year-old white belt to the top of the karate ladder …
I don’t think respect– or perseverance-wise, I’ve ever seen one better!
