What getting a Black Belt means to me: That I did something that requires perseverance, manners, respect, humility, self discipline and courage. My parents are to thank for at least half of the honor of this achievement. They gave me the motivation to follow up on what I had started. Mr. Jones also deserves a large portion of the honor of this achievement. He acts as a role model to me. His motivational talks inspired me and have helped me to achieve this goal. He always seems to know the right words to say. This is my favorite part of karate. That is what getting a Black Belt means to me.

The Ballad of Zachary Bradshaw

by Conrad Jones, February 2004

When Zachary came to the school, we didn’t know if he would last …
But after a few short months, we said, “Wow! This guy’s fast!”

Even though he was young, his concentration was more than a child’s …
He would work hard in class, and he never did lose his smile!

His stances got better and better, and man, was he quick!
You definitely didn’t want to be too close when he unleashed his spinning kick!

His concentration, manners and respect were easy to see …
Before we knew it, karate had infected his sisters, Katherine and Lindsay.

The values that Alan and Leah have so thoughtfully in their children instilled
Will help ensure that their lives will be fulfilled.

Zachary worked hard, and now he is “Mr. Bradshaw.”
He is a true example of a Black Belt for us all.

So, many thanks to the whole Bradshaw family for all you have done for our school …
By knowing you, our lives are better, and that’s really cool.
