Self Defense - Goshin Waza

Self Defense Movements
This section provides descriptions for the self defense movements that are required through the
1st Dan ranking. Variations of each move (e.g., 9A, 9B, 9C) may be added from time to time, so
this list may not contain all of the current variations.

# 1 – The Knee
TORI: Step toward Defender and begin to apply a front bear hug.
UKE: Wait until Tori is within reach, then swing arms up from hips in an
inside-out fashion, grabbing forearms of Tori, and pulling the Tori into a knee (hiza)
strike.

 

# 2 – Double Lapel Grab
TORI: Step toward Defender and grab both labels with both of his arms.
UKE: Bring one arm over Tori's, and grab the opposite side wrist of the
Tori, while simultaneously stepping backwards to bring the Tori off balance, and to gain
momentum to be used in a sudden step forward toward the Tori supplying a elbow strike
(empi) to the face.

 

# 3 – The Jeff Moore
TORI: Step toward Defender and grab same side lapel with one arm.
UKE: Bring opposite side arm up from hips, slap Tori's face, and grab the
Tori's attacking arm by the pinky, bring up the free arm and slide it into an armlock, while
twisting both arms away and applying a side kick (yoko geri) to the Tori's knee.

 

# 4 – Back Grab/Market Wrap
TORI: From behind, grab the Defender by the clothes at about the shoulder blade
level.
UKE: Quickly turn and bring the turning side arm over the Tori's two arms and
wrap that arm over and around the two Tori arms and lift up to lock the Tori's elbow
joints, preventing him from pulling his arms out. Immediately follow up with a combination
knee, elbow, and headbutt in any combination.

 

# 5A – Back Double Wrist Grab
TORI: From behind, grab the Defender's arms at the wrist.
UKE: Quickly perform a stomp to the foot or shin to distract and stun the Tori,
then grab the Tori's wrists, and bring one arm up violently, while twisting toward that arm
and stepping behind the Tori's legs to trip them, and take them down to the ground.

 

# 5B – Back Double Wrist Grab
TORI: From behind, grab the Defender's arms at the wrist.
UKE: Quickly perform a stomp to the foot or shin to distract and stun the Tori,
then drop into a horse stance and bring both arms up violently. Grab one of the Tori's hands
on the pinky side, twist it under into an armlock.

 

# 6A – Throat Grab A
TORI: Walk toward the Defender and attempt to apply a front, two-handed choke on
the neck.
UKE: Once the Tori makes contact, before his grip becomes tight, turn
sideways and apply a palm heel (shotei) strike to his chest, which will stun him, and also extend
your distance beyond his reach.

 

# 6B – Throat Grab B
TORI: Walk toward the Defender and attempt to apply a front, two-handed choke on
the neck.
UKE: Once the Tori makes contact, before his grip becomes tight, turn
sideways and as you press both of his elbows together, and spin him off and away from your
throat.

 

# 7 – Hammer swing
TORI: Walk toward the Defender, and attempt to hit him in the head in a downward
motion as if you were trying to hit him with a hammer.
UKE: As the attacking arm falls, intercept it with a jodan uchi, followed
immediately by an armlock, by bringing the free hand over the Tori's, and back under tucking
your hand under your other forearm. Once the lock is in place, step toward the direction the
Tori came from with the right leg, placing it behind the Tori to create a trip, and carry
him to the ground, landing your right knee on his ribs to pin him, and then supply a finishing
punch or shotei to the face or throat.

 

# 8 – Handshake #1
TORI: From a handshake, squeeze and don’t let go.
UKE: Do a spinning back-leg side kick to the Tori's stomach to break his grip.

 

9A – Wrist Lock #1A
TORI: Grab the Defender's opposite wrist with fingers turned in.
UKE: Take your free hand and place it across the Tori's attacking hand. While
controlling his hand, slightly roll his hand over and your hand with it until your wrist is in a
vertical position, as this happens, make your grabbed hand into a tense knifehand, and once the
rotation is in the vertical position, apply pressure with the knife hand into the wrist of the
Tori and take him down to the ground in a wrist lock.

 

# 9B – Wrist Lock #1B – Billy Jack Double Grab
TORI: Grab the Defender's wrist with both hands.
UKE: Take your free hand and grab your other hand, locking your palms together.
Rotate your arm up, over, and downward in a circular motion to break it free of the Tori's
grasp.

 

# 9C – Wrist Lock #1C
TORI: Grab the defender's wrist with the same-side hand.
UKE: Take your free hand and place it across the Tori's attacking hand. Spin
around him so your backs are together. Extend your near-side leg to sweep him as you pull him
down.

 

# 10 – Ground Knee breaker
TORI: Approach a grounded Defender with a kick to the ribs.
UKE: Prevent the full force of the kick from harming the ribs by blocking the kick
with the bicep part of the arm, then after the force has been received, immediately wrap the
blocking arm around the kicking foot so as to trap it, then follow with an elbow strike from the
opposite side arm, as you break the knee, and trip the Tori, continuing on with the elbow
strike into a roll across the Tori, and finishing off with a backfist (urachen) to the face.

 

# 11 – Ground Stomp
TORI: Approach a grounded Defender with a stomp to the stomach.
UKE: Block the stomp by bring in the knees and arms into a tuck position, them
grab the foot while kicking the Tori, and rolling over while they fall, tuck their free foot in
the bend of the leg you have trapped, then bring the grabbed leg up toward their hips, locking the
trapped leg, and then supply a shotei strike to the back of the head.

 

# 12 – Ground Cannon Launcher
TORI: Approach a grounded Defender and attempt to grab his feet and drag him off
somewhere.
UKE: Once you begin to be slide, pull your knees in so that you can grab the
Tori's ankles, then do a double leg kick, sending him into next week. As he falls, put him
into the leg-lock/groin kick technique.

 

# 13 – Bearhug Throw
TORI: Grab the Defender from behind in a bear hug.
UKE: After the grab, bring your arms up over the Tori's to gain a grip, then
drop one leg out to the side, and at the same time, do a twisting bodyshift toward that leg, sending
the Tori flying over your opposite side shoulder into the ground.

 

# 14A – Back Kibadachi Pull Through
TORI: Approach the Defender from behind and attempt to do a back bearhug.
UKE: After the arms pass your body plane, but before they grab you, drop into a
kibadachi, blocking the arms outward, apply a distraction elbow, then reach between your legs,
grab one of the Tori's legs and pull him through, bring him to the ground, then drop on one
knee and pull up one of his legs into a leg lock.

 

# 14B – Back Kibadachi Pull Through
TORI: Approach the Defender from behind and execute a back bearhug under the
arms.
UKE: Similar to #14A, but allow the bearhug, then, drop into a kibadachi, blocking
the arms outward, apply a distraction elbow, then reach between your legs, grab one of the
Tori's legs, and pull him through, bring him to the ground, then drop on one knee and pull up
one of his legs into a leg lock.

 

# 14C – The Last Samurai
TORI: Approach the Defender from behind and attempt to do a back bearhug.
UKE: After the arms pass your body plane, but before they grab you, drop into a
kibadachi, blocking the arms outward, apply a distraction elbow, then reach between your legs,
grab one of the Tori's legs and pull him through, bring him to the ground, then grab the toes
and heel of the foot and roll over as you twist his foot 180 degrees. (Can be seen in the movie
"The Last Samurai" at 57:27.)

 

# 15A – Headlock Flip
TORI: Apply a side headlock.
UKE: Do three or four loosening groin punches, then bring your other hand back
and over the Tori's shoulder and grab his throat while taking the punching hand and grabbing
his inside leg, and doing a quick counterclockwise twisting throw technique to free yourself.

 

# 15B – Headlock Flip/ArmBar
TORI: Apply a side headlock.
UKE: Same as 15A but do the step across, fall back 'Up Gracie' armbar at the end.

 

# 15C – Near Headlock
TORI: Grab around neck from behind attemping to put the defender in a headlock.
UKE: Quickly turn your head to the side and grab the Tori's hands to keep the
pressure off your throat. Elbow hard into the Tori's solar plexus as you step back and duck
out from under their arms. Kick to the knee as you move back.

 

# 16A – Scissors
TORI: Stand in a fighting stance with your hands out ready to punch.
UKE: Jump forward grabbing the Tori's lead hand, then bring your front leg
around the Tori's waist while simultaneously bring your back leg up behind the Tori's
waist, and by twisting your legs like a pair of scissors slam the Tori down, hitting his back
and head onto the ground. (This can also be done from a grounded position, but it isn't as
powerful in this instance.)

 

# 16B – Scissors
TORI: Same as 16A.
UKE: Same as 16A but add the leg lock against your thigh, pulling the leg in to
hyperextend their knee.

 

# 17A – High Knife Spinning Backfist
TORI: Approach the Defender from the front and point a weapon toward the
Tori's face.
UKE: With hand upright, do a quick spinning middle block, and nagasuzuki side
step, countering with a spinning backfist. (Nagasuzuki simply means "get off of the train track by
shifting your body out of the way of the attack.")

 

# 17B – Middle Knife Stab
TORI: Approach the Defender from the front and point a weapon toward the
Tori's stomach.
UKE: With hands upright, do a quick inward block (ude uke), nagasuzuki, grabbing
the arm from the top with your blocking arm, kicking the Tori's knee, then bringing your free
hand to grab the attacking arm from the bottom securing your grip of the weapon arm, then turn
the weapon back into the Tori's stomach.

 

# 18A – Back High Knife
TORI: Approach the Defender from the back and point a weapon toward the back of
the Defender's head.
UKE: Do a spinning middle block into the weapon arm, followed simultaneously
by a shotei to the face and a knee to the groin.

 

# 18B – Back Middle Knife
TORI: Approach the Defender from the back and point a weapon toward the back of
the Tori's spine.
UKE: Do a spinning low block into the weapon arm and wrap your blocking arm
around the weapon arm while you knee them in the groin and pull them over. Put their knife arm in the crook of your elbox, and step over their arm, with your leg over and locking their head.

 

# 19 – Wild Right #1
TORI: Do a running wild right swing at the Defender.
UKE: Duck under the swing, and meet the Tori's stomach with your inside
knee, then supply an elbow strike into the Tori's doubled over back.
 

# 20 – Wild Right #2 – Matador
TORI: Do a running wild right swing at the Defender.
UKE: At the last second, do a nagasuzuki, grabbing the attacking arm, and stepping
in a circular path around the Tori, slapping your other free hand into the side of the Tori's
head, allowing his momentum to continue past you, creating a safe distance for further defense.
You will have a second or two in which you can control his direction, and you can redirect him
into another Tori, or a wall, chair, obstacle, etc.

 

# 21 – Side Sweep
TORI: Hold a weapon from the side of the Defender, to his head.
UKE: With hands up, do a spin toward the Tori with the first move being a
middle block and knee to the Tori's groin, followed by a shoulder grab, and reverse sweep
with the kneeing leg bringing it behind the Tori, and sweeping their leg forward, and pushing
their shoulder backwards creating a backwards falling sweep.

 

# 22 – Drunk/Kalus Clamp/Frog-Bite
TORI: Facing the Defender, do a straight grab of his lapel.
UKE: Reach up and trap the grabbing hand while reaching across and grabbing the
shoulder, and do an outside-in sweep of the same attacking-side leg.

 

# 23A – Frontwards - I love you man
TORI: Do a front bear hug.
UKE: Fists into ribs, "frogbite" lat nerves, kick through to groin, then hook leg and
push away.

 

# 23B – Backwards - I love you man
TORI: Do a rear bear hug.
UKE: Loosening move. Heel kick to groin, then hook leg and push away.

 

# 24 – The Wall
TORI: Tori #1, Do a lapel grab facing the opponent. Tori #2, come in after
first attack.
UKE: Do a slap/pinky grab, armbar twist as in #3, and slam them into the wall, then
redirect them back out into the path of Tori #2.

 

# 25 – Kick Throw
TORI: Tori #1, attack like #13, Tori #2 come in from front of Defender and
Tori #1.
UKE: Do a front kick to Tori #2, then do #13 and throw Tori #1 into
Tori #2.

 

# 26 – Leg Sweeper
TORI: Do a front roundhouse mid to high level roundhouse kick.
UKE: Step inside the kick, grabbing the leg inside the knee with the outside arm,
and grabbing the shoulder with the inside hand, while stepping your inside leg behind their
grounded leg, and do an effortless sweep to the ground.

 

# 27 – Rick Stone's Kempo
TORI: Catch and hold a front kick from the Defender.
UKE: Punch to the face, and simultaneously slip in with the grounded foot, then
kick the caught foot to get away.

 

# 28 – Moon-Raker
TORI: While facing the Defender, grab each lapel with both hands.
UKE: Bring one arm over one of the Tori's arms, and bring the other arm under
the Tori's other arm locking them in the middle by interlocking the fingers. Then quickly
bring the low arm up while bringing the up arm down, and break their grip, following with a
spinning elbow to the face.

 

# 29 – Rib-Breaker
TORI: Tori starts behind the Defender trapping one of the Defender's arms
behind the Defender in an armbar with one hand, and holding the Defender's shoulder with the
other hand.
UKE: Do a loosening elbow with the free arm, and then do a spin while grabbing
the trapped arms wrist, and land a side kick into the Tori's ribs under the arm you are now
holding the wrist on. As you kick, pull the arm towards you to maximize the number of ribs
broken.


# 30 – Back Choke-Throw
TORI: Attack same as #29, except the free arm is over the shoulder and across the
neck.
UKE: Start with a loosening elbow with the free hand as in #29, then execute a
throw like #13.
